A Randomized Algorithm for Simultaneously Diagonalizing Symmetric Matrices by Congruence

The paper introduces a randomized simultaneous diagonalization by congruence (RSDC) algorithm that reduces the problem to a generalized eigenvalue problem using two random linear combinations. It proves exact recovery with probability one for exactly SDC families and provides perturbation bounds for regular SDC families, including a high‑probability robust‑recovery guarantee under a positive definiteness assumption. The method is combined with an optimization algorithm and tested on synthetic data, image separation, and EEG analysis, outperforming existing optimization‑based methods in effici…

From the faucet to the sewer, and vice versa

The article describes Switzerland’s long history of water purification, from early cesspits to modern mechanical‑biological treatment plants, and highlights EPFL researchers’ work on virus‑free purification, wastewater recycling, and urban runoff mitigation. It notes that EPFL’s Laboratory of Environmental Virology studies adenoviruses, while other labs develop molecular sponges to recover heavy metals and a sponge‑city prototype to reduce gray water. The piece also points out that computer scientists are modeling surface‑area improvements and that Yverdon‑les‑Bains is testing treated wastewa…

Building digital societies as ecosystems: how recognition and repeat relationships sustain cross-community work in open source

The study reconstructs a bipartite contributor–repository graph of 464 cybersecurity-focused OSS projects and 11,372 contributors from 2001 to 2022, identifying 163 non‑singleton communities. It finds superlinear scaling of contributors with repository count, a logistic growth trajectory peaking in 2018, and three key patterns: cross‑community work is concentrated in a small group of contributors, boundary friction is relationship‑specific rather than fixed, and community survival is cohort‑structured with higher hazard for later cohorts. The analysis provides a pre‑AI baseline before large‑l…

The first map of lipids in the mouse brain

EPFL scientists have created a detailed atlas of lipids across the entire mouse brain, identifying 539 distinct territories called lipizones based on 172 lipid species measured with MALDI-MSI. The atlas reveals that lipid patterns align with known anatomy and uncover new chemical boundaries, and it also documents significant lipid changes during pregnancy. The data and machine‑learning tools used to build the 3‑D model are freely available online.

FIT for the Future: Shared roof for the research institutes

The ETH Board approved a new organisational structure, the “Swiss National Labs”, to bring the four ETH research institutes (PSI, Empa, Eawag, WSL) under a shared roof while retaining their individual identities. The plan aims to strengthen coordination, merge support services, and enhance collaboration on strategic research programmes such as AI, health, energy and the environment.

Mystery surrounding the formation of asteroid Bennu solved

Researchers at ETH Zurich analysed samples returned from NASA’s OSIRIS‑REx mission and found that asteroid Bennu likely formed near the water‑ice line in the early Solar System, where fine dust from inner and outer regions mixed. Isotopic fingerprints of iron, titanium and chromium link Bennu to Ryugu and CI meteorites, indicating a shared origin in a transition zone influenced by early Jupiter growth. The findings challenge previous assumptions that such asteroids formed far out in the Solar System and provide new insights into planetary formation and the delivery of water and organics to Ea…

The far side of the Moon provides clues to a previous magnetic field

ETH Zurich researchers used gravity and magnetic data from lunar orbiters to model a buried volcanic complex in the Dewar region, concluding that the Moon had an internal magnetic field about 4.2 billion years ago, likely generated by a core dynamo. They ruled out impact‑induced magnetisation and linked the magnetic anomaly to a lunar swirl, suggesting a protective magnetic field against solar wind. The study introduces a new method for inferring planetary dynamos from orbital data.
