EPFL researchers built a bilayer graphene antidot that acts as a sensitive charge meter, detecting quasiparticles with charges of one‑third, two‑thirds, and other fractions of an electron in various quantum Hall states. The device revealed one‑third and two‑thirds charges at state 8/3 and confirmed predictions for states 4/3, 5/3, 7/3, 2/3, and 3/5. This simple, tunable setup offers a practical method to study topological quantum matter.

The Swiss Federal Audit Office examined the Federal Office for the Environment’s handling of the third Rhone correction, the country’s largest flood protection project. The audit found that the FOEN has actively supervised the project and reduced financial risks to the Confederation since 2022 by suspending payments for pre‑funded services. While three of four past recommendations were implemented, the recommendation on subsidy refunds was not fulfilled.

A workshop titled ‘Science Diplomacy in Practice’ was held at the University of Bern on 17 August 2026, bringing together about a hundred diplomats, scientists, and research institutions from Switzerland and Africa. The event, organized by the FDFA, the Universities of Bern and Basel, and the Africa Division, aimed to strengthen synergies between research, innovation, and diplomacy under the Federal Council's Africa Strategy 2025–28. Participants discussed existing scientific partnerships, such as the ETH Zurich–Ashesi University collaboration, and identified ways to better coordinate these i…

EPFL engineers have designed acoustic cavities that convert sound waves into thrust, enabling small robots and ultralight aerial vehicles without onboard actuators or electronics. They built miniature boats and microfliers using 3D printing, demonstrating sound-driven propulsion at both audible and ultrasonic frequencies. This research shows a new method for wireless actuation in robotics.

The dataset is a public-domain subset of the NASA Image and Video Library, filtered and captioned with a Qwen vision-language model. It contains 36,997 images covering spaceflight, astronomy, planetary science, Earth observation and aeronautics from NASA centers such as JPL, KSC, MSFC, JSC and GSFC. The images were sourced directly from NASA's public API and prepared by the Swiss AI Initiative vision team.
