Super-resolution imaging reveals details inside living cells

Researchers at EPFL in Switzerland have developed SPIFFI, a single-exposure super‑resolution fluorescence microscopy technique that uses polarized light to image dynamic cellular structures such as mitochondria and microtubules. SPIFFI achieves up to a two‑fold resolution improvement, enabling real‑time visualization of fast cellular processes and producing super‑resolved videos from each frame. The method can be integrated with existing microscopes and combined with post‑processing techniques to reach ~80‑nanometer resolution.

Switching chiral phonons with electricity

Scientists at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland, demonstrated that an electric field can reverse the handedness of chiral phonons in barium titanate, a ferroelectric material. The reversal persists after the field is removed, and the effect was observed at room temperature using only 3 V. The handedness was read out with circularly polarised X‑rays via resonant inelastic X‑ray scattering at the ESRF in Grenoble.

Die Evolution der KI-Ontologie und der KI-Sicherheit: Von euklidischer KI-Mechanik zur ethischen AGI-Lösung (PINNs => SINNs und SPINNs)

The paper discusses the historical evolution of AI as it approaches a crucial ontological turning point, moving beyond the simulation of Euclidean physics and the computation of dead matter (PINNs) or purely statistical physical mimicry (Generative World Models). It introduces SINHRI’s Harmonic Intrinsic Alignment (HIA) and Causal-Energetic Harmonic Manifold (CEHM), and defines a new taxonomy of intelligence research with SINNs (Syntropic-Informed Neural Networks) and the future SPINNs (Syntropic-Physics Informed Neural Networks). This marks a paradigm shift from entropy-based mechanics to a …

Low‑carbon concrete durability assessed via climate‑informed corrosion modelling

ETH Zurich researchers developed a model that uses detailed weather data to simulate moisture fluctuations in reinforced concrete and predict steel corrosion rates. The study shows that the same concrete can experience corrosion up to a hundred times faster in wet conditions and that climate patterns, rather than concrete mix composition, largely determine long‑term durability. Current European standards classify all tested sites similarly, potentially hindering the wider adoption of low‑carbon concrete.

Hallucination Is Generative Memory With Its Verifier Turned Down: One Constraint Axis Links Dreaming Sleep and LLM Confabulation

The paper argues that hallucination in large language models and dreaming in the brain are both generative reconstructions from distributed memory under incomplete constraints, organized into a four‑stage account of encoding, latent representation, generative reconstruction, and reality verification. It shows that the difference between reliable output and hallucination is governed by the strength of constraints and verification, and presents a small test on 300 PopQA questions where adding a verifier reduces hallucination rates in two language models. The study provides a framework and testa…

Small, medium or large, a robotic fish maintains its swimming ability

Researchers at EPFL and New York University have developed ScaFi, a scalable robotic fish that can be produced in various sizes while preserving fish-like swimming motion. The design uses a rigid front and a flexible tail with a single motor and crossed tendons, and only the tail rod diameter changes with size. Three prototypes (0.6, 1.1, and 2.9 m long) were tested in laboratory and field conditions, showing consistent swimming gait across scales, though energy efficiency varied.

ERC Starting Grants for six ETH researchers

Six researchers at ETH Zurich have been awarded European Research Council Starting Grants, each receiving up to 1.5 million euros for five years. The grants cover diverse fields including artificial intelligence, robotics, biomedicine, chemistry, and statistics, and represent a small fraction of the 450 grants awarded across Europe. The projects aim to advance fundamental science and develop new technologies such as AI language model theory, soft tissue scaffolds, and novel chemical materials.

Current and Future Directions for Responsible Quantum Technologies: A ResQT Community Perspective

Quantum technologies are rapidly advancing, raising ethical, societal, and geopolitical concerns such as dual-use capabilities and a potential quantum divide. The Responsible Quantum Technologies (ResQT) community has emerged to share knowledge and best practices, aiming to align quantum development with ethical principles, promote equity, and mitigate unintended consequences. The paper synthesizes current ResQT work and outlines future actions, including responsible research and innovation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable development to build trust and participatory development of qu…
